Surge and Lightning Arresters

Voltage transients commonly occur from lightning, switching or other disturbances.  Without surge protection, electrical equipment can be damaged creating hazards and outages.
There are many important factors to consider when selecting and installing surge arresters.
Different variations of surge arrester designs must be selected depending on the electrical supply configuration, ie grounding, phase and neutral configuration.
The following are important ratings that must be understood to determine the right arrester for the application.
  •  MCOV
  •  Maximum discharge voltage tables for various waveforms
  •  Fault current or pressure relief ratings
  •  High current withstand
  • TOV curves
  • System configuration
Choosing the wrong surge arrester can cause catastrophic failure of the arrester and surrounding equipment, disturbances on the supply and/or prevent operation.
